Friday, June 03, 2005Details, details...
Okay, well when I got home today I was in no mood for posting (just getting my hopes for a second job crushed again tends to do that). Anyway, what happened was: I dressed up in a semi-casual fashion, to impress them or whatever, and headed to Cool Springs. When I sat down, the manager said "Why do you want to be a server?" I said, "I need some more money for school next year and I have never waited tables, and I'm sick of working retail and would like a new experience" or something like that. Well, he led me to believe that he was interested in getting my help.
Then he pulled out the classic line, you know, we don't need people just for summer (blah blah blah blah blah). Even though, mind you, in Brentwood the manager said that at Cool Springs they DID need summer help. The manager was very apologetic, and he said that my references "checked-out" and that everything else looked good on the app, but dang it I guess I should have started looking for work earlier in the summer (you were right, Mom). Other than that, I introduced my parents to the goodness of Christopher Guest tonight. Me and my sisters and Adam (Mauldin) and my parents all gathered around the TV for a good old fashioned movie night and watched "Waiting for Guffman". It's probably one of the only movies that I think is funny that I feel pretty much safe watching with my parents. They thought it was funny as well. So that was a fun time. So tomorrow it's back to the battlefield of looking for work. I wonder how much gas money have I burned looking for ways to earn more? I don't even want to know.
Well, no luck with that venture.
I really hope Kroger calls back, or else I get to start this whole job hunt over again! Yay! Thursday, June 02, 2005An entry nearly as long as the movie Madagascar is short...
Okay, well I still haven't found my bike, hm. Not good. Anyhow...
I have gotten a few things done in the past few days though, but not many. I returned to work at Sam Goody for two days. Memorial day was crowded at first, totally dead at the end, all-in-all a not fun day. Both Jessi and I were in a horrible mood, I was tired, Sam Goody TV was on an endless loop, as always...which is probably the worst part. Somehow our two pissy moods sort of cancelled each other out, strangely enough, and we had fun just generally bitching about things (isn't that what we always do at work anyway?). The next day was a lot more manageable. Why? Maybe because I got twelve hours of sleep the night before, or maybe because I only had to work for 3 1/2 hours instead of 6 1/2. Wednesday I sat down and looked over my finances for next year, they were, as I expected, pretty dire. I had nearly given up on finding a second job and was planning to just save a lot of money this summer and spend none, since the Goody was promising me a lot of hours next week. Well, while I was making up this theoretical budget for next year, I called up work and asked for my schedule. It consisted of no hours. None. Zip. And this was a week with supposed 'lots of hours' available for us. So this got me thinking, along with realizing there was no way I could live at all comfortably next year with just zero hours of work per week, that I should get myself a second job. So it was off to Kroger this morning. As I was filling out the Kroger app, my sister's boyfriend Adam said that Ruby Tuesday's in Brentwood was hiring, and looking for people who were over 18 to be servers. Well, before I went to turn in my Kroger application, I stopped by Ruby Tuesday's to see if this was really true. Of course, it wasn't. I talked to their manager and after he tricked me into saying I would be gone this fall to go back to school, he said that I should go to the Cool Springs location because they needed help just for the summer. So I went to Kroger, got an interview there (they'll call on Monday with a yes or no), and then headed to my favorite place in the whole wide world, the Cool Springs Galleria. The manager at this Ruby Tuesday's said I should come back at 4:30 to talk to this other manager. ...so, I came back then and talked to him. He tried to throw me by asking, "Tell me something about yourself...that isn't on this application". Well, there goes my "Well, I go to school at MTSU" line I was about to spit out. After thinking for a quick second, I told him that I play guitar and drums, and really like music, hence the working at Sam Goody forever. We talked about bands we liked and whatever, it was nice and casual too, he seems like a nice guy. It even turns out he's a Band of Blue alum so that spurred even more discussion. Anyway, I guess he liked me because I've got a second interview tomorrow with the general manager. If all goes well, my parents can finally shut up about me getting a second job...oh, and more importantly, I won't be poor next year. But my parents' getting off my back is worth more than all the money in the world to me right now. Also, this evening Adam and I went to see Madagascar along with Emily and some of her friends. I'd say...wait until you can rent it. I wasn't really that impressed. I guess it has its funny moments, mostly the parodies of other films, but if you're looking for things like plot and character development and non-spastic, subtle animation, go somewhere else. Well this is what happens when I don't post on a daily basis...I write a term paper. Well, more news from the job front tomorrow afternoon...and hopefully...I'll have a second career by then.
